Jemaa el-Fna at night is the highlight of any trip to Marrakech. As the sun sets, the square transforms into a huge open-air food market wrapped in smoke, lantern light, music and crowds. It is free to enter, lively until well past midnight, and completely safe for visitors who keep the usual city-centre awareness.
What happens on the square after dark
From around 6pm, dozens of numbered food stalls are wheeled in and fired up. Gnaoua musicians form drum circles, storytellers gather crowds, and the terraces of the surrounding cafés fill with people watching the spectacle from above. It is one of the most atmospheric hours anywhere in Morocco.

- Eat at the food stalls — grilled brochettes, harira soup, merguez and fresh juices. Agree the price before ordering.
- Watch from a rooftop café for the best photos of the square at dusk.

Is Jemaa el-Fna safe at night?
Yes. The square is busy and well-policed. Keep valuables secure in the crowds, agree prices in advance, and be aware that photos with performers (monkeys, snake charmers) are expected to be tipped.
