This 3-day, 2-night excursion runs from Marrakech across the Atlas to the great Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara. Along the way you see Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dadès and Todra gorges and the Draa palm groves, with a camel trek into the dunes and a night in a desert camp under the stars.
Marrakech to the Sahara and back
The classic overland route to the desert, this small-group excursion links the great sights of southern Morocco over three days, finishing at the golden sand sea of Erg Chebbi — dunes that rise up to 150 metres near the village of Merzouga.
Day by day
- Day 1 — Marrakech to Dadès: over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stopping at Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, then along the Valley of the Roses to the Dadès Gorges for the night.
- Day 2 — Dadès to Merzouga: through the Todra Gorge and the Tafilalet palm groves to the edge of the dunes, then a camel trek into Erg Chebbi to a desert camp for dinner, drumming and a night under the stars.
- Day 3 — Merzouga to Marrakech: sunrise over the dunes, then the drive back across the Atlas via the Draa Valley.
Good to know
This is a real road trip with long but scenic driving days; nights are spent in a gorge hotel and a desert camp. Pack a warm layer for the desert evenings, sun protection for the day and a small bag for the overnight in the dunes. Itineraries can be adapted for private groups.
