As night falls on Jemaa el-Fna, Gnaoua musicians form drum-and-krakeb circles whose hypnotic, trance-like rhythms are one of the square’s signature sounds. Their music has roots in sub-Saharan Africa and is a pillar of Moroccan popular culture.
The sound of the square
Gnaoua ensembles blend the guembri (a three-string bass lute), metal castanets (krakeb) and call-and-response singing. Alongside them you’ll hear Berber troupes and Aissawa groups, each with a distinct style.
When and how to see them
The musicians play mostly in the evening. A guide helps you find the best circles and understand what you’re hearing. Explore them on the square at night, and see all our Marrakech tours. More tips in the Jemaa el-Fna guide.
