The Storytellers (Hlaiqi) of Jemaa el-Fna

The hlaiqi are the traditional storytellers of Jemaa el-Fna — the living memory of Marrakech. Standing in a circle (halqa) of listeners, they recite tales of sultans, saints and tricksters in Moroccan Arabic, a craft that earned the square its UNESCO status as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

An oral tradition that made the square famous

For centuries the hlaiqi have drawn crowds at dusk, mixing history, humour and moral fables passed down through generations. Their art is fragile: few master storytellers remain, which is exactly why the square is protected.

See them for yourself

The storytellers gather in the late afternoon and evening. A local guide helps you understand the performances and the etiquette (a small tip is expected). Discover them on our Medina & souks walking tour or after dark on the square at night. Plan everything with our complete Jemaa el-Fna guide.
