In bright red costumes hung with brass cups and jangling bells, the guerrab — traditional water sellers — are one of the most colourful symbols of Jemaa el-Fna. Once essential to daily life in Marrakech, today they are living folklore and a favourite photo subject.
A tradition in costume
The guerrab historically sold cups of water from goatskin bags; now they pose for photos in exchange for a small tip. Their leather hats and copper cups are unmistakable across the square.
See them on the square
You’ll spot the water sellers by day near the busiest crossings. Agree a tip before taking a photo. Discover the square’s characters on a medina walking tour and plan your trip with the Jemaa el-Fna guide.
