THE GREAT ESCAPE
DAY TRIP TO OUZOUD WATERFALLS
A full day at the Ouzoud Falls, the highest waterfalls in North Africa, with Barbary macaques, boat rides and olive groves.
The Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip heads about 150 km north-east of Marrakech to Morocco's most famous falls, where the river drops roughly 110 metres in a series of cascades through red cliffs and olive groves. You leave the Jemaa el-Fna area in the morning and return in the evening, with time to walk down to the base of the falls and see the resident Barbary macaques.
The highest falls in Morocco
Ouzoud — the name means “the olives” in Amazigh — is a set of waterfalls that plunge around 110 metres into a green gorge on the edge of the Middle Atlas. It is the single most spectacular waterfall in Morocco and one of the best-loved day trips from Marrakech.
What you will do
- Walk down to the base — a shaded path winds past olive groves and viewpoints to the foot of the falls, where the spray often throws up rainbows.
- Meet the Barbary macaques — troops of wild monkeys live in the trees around the gorge and are used to visitors.
- Take a boat ride — small wooden boats ferry visitors right up to the falling water at the bottom of the gorge.
- Lunch with a view — terraced restaurants overlook the cascades, a good spot for a tagine before the drive back.
Good to know
The descent to the base and the climb back up involve steps and uneven ground, so comfortable shoes are recommended; you can go at your own pace. The scenery is greenest from spring to early summer, but the falls run all year. It is a full day out, with roughly 2.5 hours of driving each way through Berber farmland.
